Gemona del friuli dalla preistoria all'epoca romana... in inglese...

Gemona del friuli

Gemona since prehistoric times was one of the most important steps required on the direct road to the north-eastern passes of the Alps.
On top of nearby Mount Cumieli you still maintain different sections of walls of a fortified settlement related to the presence of karst, which is assumed installed between 1300 and 1100 BC. Traces of Celtic related to 500 BC have been identified in the town now called Godo. In the same area amounted Silans the name: the term refers to a fountain which still exists today, would think of Silanos For locations, shown as a stopping point on the road between Aquileia and Noricum (now Austria) in Tabula Peutingeriana, a sort of street index medieval painting that reproduces the ancient Roman itineraries. To ensure that this recognition hypotheses of the ancient Roman settlement on the Via Julia Augusta, also, is the very presence of the fountain (in Latin means Silanus its source, gargoyle fountain) and a number of archaeological finds from the Roman period (including traces of road).
little further north, still in the town of Gemona, in the hamlet of Ospedaletto, other traces of the road along with inscriptions, urns and coins, suggesting a second settlement just where the road began to narrow between the mountains.
From 166 to 452 AD there were invasions of Quadi, the Marcomanni, the Visigoths and Huns. From 489 to 553 Friuli was occupied by the Ostrogoths of Theodoric, a group of whom settled in present location Godo. Between 553 and 568 there was the Byzantine brief occupation that followed, up to 776, the long period of Lombard rule.
Gemona is mentioned for the first time by the historian Paul the Deacon in Cividalese Langobardorum Historia, where he appoints a Castrum Glemonae, probably Lombard fortification erected by the Duke Gisulfo in 611 after the invasion of the Avars in 610.
From 776 to 952, under the rule of the Carolingians, began the development of the first urban Gemona.
